On Monday, April 17, 2017, while assigned to marked unit West-6, I was dispatched to Dunkin’ Donuts, located at 240 Elm Street, for the report of a larceny. Charlie 6 also responded.
Upon arrival, I spoke with the victim, XXXXX. According to XXXXX, at approximately 1130-1140 XXXXX set down two phones, an Apple iPhone 7 Plus, color red, and a Google Pixel, color black, on the table and stepped away for a few minutes. During the time XXXXX was away from the table and his phones, two females and a male, later identified as the suspects, approached the table where the phones were, sat down at the adjacent table, and looked at both phones a few times. One of the females, Caucasian, heavyset, with short blonde hair, wearing a black hoodie or jacket, black pants with a white stripe down the side, and white and dark colored sneakers, sat down at the adjacent table and set aside a walker. This female was later identified as YYYYY. The other female, Caucasian, medium to heavy set, with long dark hair, wearing dark pants or jeans, with a black hoodie and white sunglasses on her head, sat down across from YYYYY. This female was later identified as ZZZZZ. Accompanying both women was the defendant, Roderick St. Rose, a black male, medium build, wearing a black jacket with white trim and a very large orange and yellow logo with writing on the back, a dark colored baseball cap, and eyeglasses, sat at the table with the phones. At one point, it appears as if both YYYYY and ZZZZZ point to the security camera that captures the entire incident. After a few minutes, ZZZZZ stands up, walks a few feet away from the table, looks around, and returns to the table. St. Rose then grabs both cell phones and exits Dunkin’ Donuts out onto Elm Street. YYYYY and ZZZZZ then get up and begin to make their way out as well, just as XXXXX returns to the table and notices his phones are missing. XXXXX appears to interact with ZZZZZ and YYYYY before they exit the store. It is then that XXXXX calls E911 to report his phones stolen.
Officer Manfra and I, upon viewing this on the security footage, put out a BOLO for the three suspects while we searched the area on foot. As I forwarded the information to Transit Police, I searched the Davis Square T Station and a few of the restaurants and shops before returning to XXXXX. I then asked XXXXX if he was able to ping the phone and he was able to. The iPhone was pinging to the area of 190 Green Street in Cambridge. I then notified Cambridge Police of the incident and gave them descriptions of YYYYY, ZZZZZ, and St. Rose along with the approximate location of where the iPhone was currently pinging. A few minutes later, Cambridge Police officers Cabral and LaMonica were able to locate ZZZZZ and St. Rose across from 194 Green Street. As Officer Manfra and I began to make our way to Green Street, along with Sgts. Kennelly and Perrone, Officer Manfra and I spotted YYYYY at the corner of Chester and Cottage Avenue. Officer Manfra exited the cruiser to stop YYYYY as I stood by and waited for marked unit West-5 responded to cover her as I made my way to Green Street.
Upon arrival on Green Street, I immediately identified ZZZZZ and St. Rose as the suspects from the security footage. During a search of both parties, Cambridge was able to locate the Google Pixel but not the iPhone. I then called XXXXX and asked him to ping the phone again and it was still showing Green Street as its current location. After being read his Miranda Warning, I asked St. Rose where the iPhone was. St. Rose kept telling us some story about how he bought the Google phone off of some guy at a bar and that he did not have any other phones. I then showed St. Rose photos I took from the security footage of him, YYYYY, and ZZZZZ sitting at the table with the phones. Finally, St. Rose admitted to taking the phones and told us that the iPhone was hidden in a grey knit cap in the driveway of 194 Green Street. I observed tape around both the cameras of the phones, which were put there by St. Rose or ZZZZZ, possibly to keep the phones from taking pictures of them accidentally. I then placed St. Rose in handcuffs and advised him that he was under arrest for Larceny over $250 and Conspiracy. I then informed ZZZZZ that I would be summoning her for Conspiracy as well. I will also summons YYYYY in for Conspiracy.
Marked unit 200 arrived on scene and transported St. Rose to the Somerville Police Department where he was booked by the shift commander, Lt. Mulcahy. After clearing Cambridge, I returned both phones to XXXXX. Video will be made available upon request as well as photos.
